About DAISIES: Dedicated Advocacy, Individual Support, Independence, and Education, for Schizophrenia and related illnesses:
We chose the name DAISIES for our group because daisies are a stubbornly strong flower - a symbol of endurance and survival. They grow despite the indignities of lawn mowers, and the crowded conditions of sidewalks. They find their way through the cracks in those systems, and grow out into the light. People with illnesses like Schizophrenia have had, throughout history, to rely on their strong backbones to guide them through tremendous cultural stigma and harassment, even brutality.
Today we have a more aware society, but still we have a long way to go before true equality is reached between people with mental illnesses and people without them. DAISIES aims to be an advocacy group that works to empower its members so that they may create positive changes in the world, and also to be a support system, in order to hold them during times of difficulty and guide them through their personal growth processes.
